AT GRIP?



Mission Statement


Recognizing that human and environmental systems are inseparable and interdependent, Gila Resources Information Project pursues two goals: 1. To protect and nurture human communities by safeguarding the natural resources that sustain us all; 2. To safeguard natural resources by facilitating informed public participation in resource use decisions. Gila Resources Information Project (GRIP) was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1998.

Staff

Allyson Siwik
Executive Director

In addition to GRIP executive director, Allyson Siwik heads up our Healthy Rivers Program, serving as the director of the Gila Conservation Coalition. She holds a master's degree in environmental management and worked 12 years for the U.S. EPA in North Carolina and Texas.

Since 2004 Siwik has served as the U.S. Co-Leader of the New Mexico-Chihuahua Rural Task Force under EPA’s U.S.-Mexico Border 2012 Program. In March 2008 she was appointed to the Good Neighbor Environmental Board by the Environmental Protection Agency. She lives in Tyrone with her husband Dennis and daughter Gabriella.

Sally Smith
Director, Responsible Mining Program

Sally Smith is our President and the director of our Responsible Mining Program. She has devoted her adult life to building community with those whom she lives with and protecting watersheds she lives within.

When not working on behalf of the environment, she enjoys gardening, writing, travelling, and spending time with her grandchildren. She lives in the Mimbres Valley.

Regina Willis
VISTA Employee

Coming from New York’s Hudson Valley, Regina joined GRIP as an AmeriCorps OSM/VISTA member as part of the Western Hardrock Watershed Team.  She is working to build capacity within GRIP, its partnering organizations and the community for the cooperative remediation of legacy mine sites in the Silver City watershed.
When she’s not around the GRIP office, Regina is often out and about exploring her new surroundings.

Siri Dharma Khalsa
Business Manager, Living Green & Membership Coordinator

Siri D. Khalsa joined GRIP in the latter part of 2007 as part-time Business Manager, Membership Coordinator and Living Green Coordinator.

Before joining GRIP's team, Siri was Outreach Coordinator for the International Relations Center, a New Mexico-based U.S. foreign policy think tank. Living sustainably is one of her top priorities; not just personally but also locally and globally. Siri is currently helping to create an Eco-Village in Silver City, and is on the Board of the Gila Mimbres Community Radio.

Richard Mahler
Get a GRIP Editor

Richard Mahler has edited the GRIP newsletter since July 2008. He is a full-time freelance writer, editor, and researcher based in Silver City, where he also guides walking tours of the historic district.

Richard is the author of 12 books on topics ranging from cooking to gardening, travel to natural history, creative aging to the rewards of solitude. His monthly column, Southwest Storylines, appears in the Desert Exposure. Learn more at www.RichardMahler.com.

John Vanvig
Communications Staff

After stepping in for Sally Smith as acting director of GRIP’s Responsible Mining Program during Sally’s sabbatical to India , John Vanvig continues to cover and write about environmental issues for GetAGRIP. Vanvig moved to Silver City in November 2007 from Wyoming, where he worked as a community organizer for the Powder River Basin Resource Council and was active in state and local Democratic Party campaigns. Vanvig is a former newspaper reporter and editor who also served as press secretary for U.S. Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND). Now, in addition to working part-time for GRIP, he is a free-lance writer and editor who likes to think of himself as semi-retired.
